Victor Uwaifo was born on March 1, 1941, in Benin City, Nigeria. He was 82 years old when he died. He fell in love with music while listening to phonograph recordings of Spanish and Latin American artists, and by the age of 12, he was already a very proficient guitarist. Career
Sir Victor’s career began while he was still in school when he was hired to perform with Victor Olaiya’s all-stars band in Lagos and led the school band. While working with the NTA, he quickly established his own band, the Melody Maestros, and recorded songs such as “Oko no mu me,” “Police and Akugbe,” and others between 1960 and 1965.
In 1965, he joined with the Philips (West Africa) label and went on to release songs like as “Guitar Boy,” “Joromi,” and “Siwo-Siwo.” At the time, these songs were extremely popular in Nigeria and other areas of Africa. He created the Akwete rhythm sound between 1965 and 1968. In 1969, he introduced a new rhythm called “Shadow,” which was accompanied by a new dance called “Shadow,” which was a combination of Akwete and twist. He followed up with another song, “Mami Water,” which he says was inspired by a meeting with a “Mami water” (Mermaid) while sunbathing on Bar Beach in Lagos.
